Dear friends across Indonesia,

Our police are brutally abusing their power and failing to provide the most basic legal services. But the recent ‘sandal case’ has provoked massive public outrage and the police are on the back foot. If enough of us raise our voices now we can build the protest and could get critical police reforms. Sign the urgent petition now to President Yudhoyono to rein in the police:

Since police in Palu brutally beat fifteen year-old A.A.L. and threatened him with a 5 year jail sentence in the ‘sandal scandal’, citizens across the country are standing up against police brutality. If we can ramp up public pressure now we could end this abuse.

This is the latest in a series of recent incidents from Aceh to Bima and from Lampung to Cilacap in which the police have turned against our children and vulnerable citizens and abused their power. But people have had enough and are sending a ‘flood of sandals’ to demonstrate their disgust. Now, the police are on the back foot and the government is feeling the heat. If we can build a huge public petition to President Yudhoyono we could force him to rein in our police and initiate critical reforms.

We have to act fast and ramp up the pressure to make sure the system is overhauled and the abuses stop. Let’s make A.A.L.’s the last case of police brutality against our kids. Click below to sign the urgent petition to SBY and then share this with family and friends! When we reach 50,000 signers we’ll deliver it directly to the President with a pair of sandals for each 1000 signers.

The police are failing to provide even the most basic legal services. At the same time, officers overstepping the law get away with murder while citizens without money or influence face harsh punishment. But while A.A.L. has been released and the officers responsible for his mistreatment got a token slap on the wrists, more and more reports of disproportionate police behaviour are surfacing.

There’s no civilian bureaucrat at its head, and the National Police Commission lacks the powers to deal effectively with police abuses. But President Yudhoyono is ultimately responsible for the police and he is said to be following recent developments. If we target him directly now he has the opportunity to respond to our outcry and start a meaningful reform process.

In early January, more than 100 pairs of sandals were delivered to the police headquarters in Jakarta, embarrassing our law-enforcers in front of national and international media. And police chief Pradopo is due to be questioned in parliament next week over the excessive use of force in the handling of recent demonstrations and clashes. We need to show the President and the police that this is not a flash in the pan public protest. Click to below to build a massive petition for urgent police reform and send this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/indonesia_sandals_for_justice/?vl

From pressing for the release of political prisoners in Burma to stopping the illegal eviction of the Occupy movement, citizens across the world working together have fought injustices — and won! Now it’s in our hands to stop Indonesian police abuse — if we unite now our voices will be heard and we can prevent more violence.

With hope,

Alice, Antonia, Morgan, Ricken, Caroline, Pascal and the entire Avaaz-team

http://www.avaaz.org/en/indonesia_sandals_for_justice/?vl

http://www.avaaz.org/en/indonesia_sandals_for_justice/?vl

Salam solidaritas,

Alice, Antonia, Morgan, Ricken, Caroline, Pascal dan seluruh tim Avaaz
